The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education presents a wealth of opportunities but also comes with significant challenges. We explore how AI can enhance education—from providing teaching support to enabling personalized learning—while also addressing ethical concerns related to bias, misinformation, and the evolving role of educators. The intersection of AI and education is a dynamic and evolving space, blending innovation with uncertainty, making it essential to navigate this field with caution and insight.

While AI offers exciting possibilities, its use also raises concerns. Here, we explore both the benefits and risks of using AI in education.

Five Cons of AI in Education

  • Bias: AI systems are only as good as the data they’re trained on. If biased information is fed into an AI like ChatGPT, students may receive biased answers, reinforcing stereotypes and societal inequalities.
  • Cheating: Students can misuse AI tools to write essays, answer test questions, or complete homework, making it easier to cheat. While AI detection tools exist, they may mistakenly flag a student’s original work as plagiarized.
  • Errors: Alongside bias, AI systems can produce misinformation. Data may be outdated, incorrect, or misleading. Students and teachers should be cautious about trusting AI-generated information without verifying its accuracy.
  • Isolation: Overreliance on AI can lead to reduced human interaction, leaving students feeling disconnected from their teachers. This lack of engagement could negatively impact motivation.
  • Job Displacement: Some educators fear AI may replace them, as AI systems become more adept at teaching and providing feedback.

Five Pros of AI in Education

  • Assistance: AI can help ease the workload for teachers by generating lesson plans, suggesting student project ideas, and creating quizzes, allowing educators to focus more on their students.
  • Speed: AI tools provide instant help to students who feel stuck. For example, a student struggling with an equation or looking to improve their essay can get immediate guidance from an AI.
  • Individualization: AI can customize learning experiences. For instance, AI can translate materials into other languages or adjust content to suit different age groups, skill levels, and interests.
  • Context: AI can offer deeper, contextualized understanding. As demonstrated in a 2023 TED Talk by Khan Academy’s Sal Khan, an AI tutor helped a student grasp the symbolism of the green light in The Great Gatsby by responding as the character in question Jay Gatsby. By offering an engaging and insightful answer when the student asked, “Why do you keep staring at the green light?” and responding as if it was Jay Gatsby himself. Imagine students using this tool to engage in conversations with various historical figures.(1)
  • Personalization: By analyzing student performance, AI tools can identify which students need additional support and recommend strategies to enhance their learning.

Striking a Balance

Effectively integrating AI into education requires thoughtful planning, continuous evaluation, and a keen awareness of its advantages and risks. AI has the potential to empower educators, accelerate learning, and personalize education, but concerns over bias, misinformation, and student isolation must be addressed. By exploring all the potential of AI, teachers can become strong advocates for their students and the future of education.
